REMARKS ON THE STABILIZATION OF CUBIC ZIRCONIA (in French)

Journal Article · · Bull. soc. chim. France
OSTI ID:4051192
The mechanism for the stabilization of zirconium oxide is defined. The mechanisms proposed by Ruff and Ebert and by Dietzel and Tober are first discussed, and their inadequacies are summarized. The oxides capable of stabilizing cubic ZrO/sub 2/ are those with the general formula MO/sub n/ (n < 2), and the cubic solid solutions formed, ZrO/sub 2/MO/sub n/, have a lacunal structure having lacunes in the anion lattice. The equilibrium diagram of these solid solutions has a eutectoid point, and the solid solution formed is also more stable when the temperature is low. The solid solution is very stable if the cation of the addition oxide is strongly electropositive. (J.S.R.)
