RADIATION AND PREGNANCY

Radiosensitivity of the human embryo is discussed in relation to the hazards of diagnostic radiologic procedures performed on women in early pregnancy. Case reports of accidental, inadvertent, or therapeutically indicated exposures suggest the fetal somatic effect to be a potential reality and that the degree and type of malformation bear a direct relation to total dose and week of gestation. Doses received by the fetal and maternal gonads during various radiologic procedures are compared. Although these doses alone appear to involve but little or no risk to the embryo, they do appear signiticant from the point of view of the induction of genetic effects, especially since the hazard lies in the repetition of exposures. As an example a case report is cited in which various procedures carried out in a 20-yr period resulted in a cumulative dose of 30 r. (BBB)
