Design of a general purpose duoplasmatron

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4049620
A duoplasmatron ion source, capable of rapid conversion between negative and positive beam operation has been constructed. Both filament and hollow cathode arc sources are used. In addition, the source can be operated in the hollow-discharge mode, and off-axis negative ion extraction techniques can be utilized. High purity ion beams are obtained by the use of metal gasket vacuum scales in the source, careful attention to cleanliness in the gas inlet system, and the use of special techniques such as hot CuO to oxidize hydrocarbons in the sample gas.
