MEASUREMENT OF THE TOTAL CROSS SECTION FOR $pi$$sup +$-p AND $pi$$sup -$-p AT 400 Mev TO 1.5 Gev (in Italian)
The total cross sections were measured for pi /sup +/-p and pi /sup -/- p interactions by attenuation in liquid hydrogen of a beam whose energy is known to plus or minus 1% and with a total DELTA P/P of plus or minus 1.8%. The energies and values for the cross sections at the maxima are: pi /sup -/-: T pi = (605 plus or minus 6) Mev, sigma /sub tot/= (45.8 plus or minus mb, T pi / sub lab/ = (890 plus or minus 9) Mev, sigma /sub tot/ = (58.0 plus or minus 1.8) m b, pi /sup +/: T pi /sub lab/= (1330 plus or minus 30) Mev, sigma /sub tot/ = (35.0 plus or minus 2.0) mb. Results are compiled concerning the elastic and inelastic cross sections obtained by other experiments techniques in the neighborhcod of the second and third resonances of pi /sup -/. The second and third resonances are discussed. (auth)
