The author presents a world history with substantial reference data of about energy in the context of environmental issues. The author demonstrates from history how an ever adaptive, creative humanity has expanded the use of energy, increased human output, and enhanced diet, income, and the freedom to choose. The data suggests that new technology reduces the environmental burden associated with less efficient technologies and increased energy use. Energy conservation programs are aimed at reducing energy, consequently the goal must be to make energy more costly, such policies can stifle advances in technology. The author raises concerns of the growth in energy demand but raises hope that achievements of the past can be sustained.
