A computational method for solving the incompressible viscous flows with a free surface is presented in this paper. The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are discretized by the finite volume method using a moving grid system fitted to the free surface. A new technique is proposed for the implementation of the nonlinear free surface conditions. The method of moving grid system on the free surface based on the inviscid boundary condition holds the conservative properties and it is able to deal with the arbitrary configuration of the free surface. Some numerical experiments are carried out to demonstrate the validity of this method. The computational results of the viscous flow around an advancing vertical cylinder piercing a free surface suggest the possibility of this method for analysis of the wave-wake interaction.
