The total cross section for scattering of potassium and sodium ions by atoms of He, Ne, Ar, Xe is measured as a function of ion energy in the range 5-- 600 eV for definite values of the minimum angles, and as a function of the aperture angle of the apparatus (0.015--0.35 rad) for a constant energy. The observed maxima are used to estimate the product of the ptential well depth epsilon and the ion--atom equilibrium distance sigma. The predominance of a polarization interaction between ions and atoms v(r) approx.r$sup -4$ is confirmed in the region of small energies. (AIP)
