Measurement of the Branching Fraction {ital B}({ital B}{sup +}{sub {ital u}}{bold {r_arrow}}{ital J}/{ital {psi}{pi}}{sup {bold +}}) and Search for {ital B}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{pi}{sup +}

We report on a measurement of the branching fraction of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay {ital B}{sup +}{sub {ital u}}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{pi}{sup +}, where {ital J}/{psi}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}. The data were collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during 1992{endash}1995 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 110 pb{sup {minus}1} in {bar {ital p}}{ital p} collisions at {radical}{ital s}=1.8 TeV. A signal of 28{sub {minus}9}{sup +10} events is observed and we determine the ratio of branching fractions {ital B}({ital B}{sup +}{sub {ital u}}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{pi}{sup +})/{ital B}({ital B}{sup +}{sub {ital u}}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{ital K}{sup +}) to be {percent}. Using the world average value for {ital B}({ital B}{sup +}{sub {ital u}}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{ital K}{sup +}), we calculate the branching fraction {ital B}({ital B}{sup +}{sub {ital u}}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{pi}{sup +}) to be (5.0{sub {minus}1.9}{sup +2.1}){times}10{sup {minus}5}. We also search for the decay {ital B}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{pi}{sup +} and report a 95{percent} confidence level limit on {sigma}({ital B}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}){ital B}({ital B}{sup +}{sub {ital c}}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{pi}{sup +})/ {sigma}({ital B}{sup +}{sub {ital u}}){ital B}({ital B}{sup +}{sub {ital u}}{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{ital K}{sup +}) as a function of the {ital B}{sup +}{sub {ital c}} lifetime. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
