On the “radius effect” in large BF3 counter tubes

A direct measurement was made of the radius effect in large-diameter (5 to 6 cm) BF3 tubes. The number of counts per minute was measured as a function of the distance from the center of the hole in the Cd screen to the anode wire. The results showed that up to a distance of 20 mm from the anode wire the efficiency of these counters is virtually constant.
