Operation of the 40-ton hydraulic shear equipped with a male Vee moving blade and semicircular stationary blade was continued, primarily to study blade life under varying conditions. Studies on methods of safely handling NaKcontaining fuel elements were completed. Development work on the Zirflex and Sulfex processes was completed. Nitric acid leaching of swaged UO/sub 2/ from chopped fuel rods was investigated on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Stainless steel and Zircaloy-clad UO/sub 2/ rods 0.5-inch in diameter were used for the studies. Experiments were continued for determining criticality parameters of enriched uranium pertinent to the reprocessing of power reactor fuels. (W.L.H.)
