ON THE BASIC THEORY OF THIN CYLINDRICAL SHELLS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4039428
A three-dimensional solution for cylindrical shells is considered and sets of solutions satisfying the exact equilib rium equations are generated. A revision of the procedure for approximating the boundary conditions is presented. This procedure is based on an order of magnitude estimate of the generating displacement coefficients of the solution and leads tc an effective scheme for determining the form of solution. Using this approach, the range of applicability of conventional thin shell theory can be extended to moderately thick cylinders. The solution ls carrled out numerically for the case of bending moments acting on the ends of the cylinder. (auth)
