A sonic spark chamber for a magnetic spectrograph

Journal Article · · Nuclear Instruments and Methods
A sonic spark chamber intended to replace the photographic plate in a broad range magnetic spectrograph is described. In this instrument, a charged particle arriving at the focal plane of the spectrograph produces a spark very close to its point of entry. The exact position of this point is then located by an ultra-sonic sound ranging technique and a spectrum of the particle intensity variation along the focal plane is automatically recorded and displayed on a multichannel time analyzer. The results of tests with this instrument operating inside a magnetic spectrograph and recording 6-Mev alpha particles and 5 to 9.5 Mev protons are given.
