DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE OF RECTANGULAR LARGE-AREA SCINTILLATION COUNTERS
The design and the problem of light collection from large-area scintillation counters are discussed. A new method of light collection is employed to collect the light from a large-area scintillation counter. It is shown that, employing this method of light collection and two RCA 58l9 photomultipliers, the response of a scintillation counter of area 100 x 35 cm/sup 2/ is uniform to within 10% except in the corners near the photomultipliers where the average pulse height increases to about 30% above the value near the center of the scintillation counter. The design presented suggests that reasonable uniformity can be obtained in a scintillation counter having an area of 1 m/sup 2/ employing three RCA 5819 photomultipliers. (auth)
