Mechanical and thermal properties were measured for composite bodies of ZrC graphite and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-ZrO/sub 2/. Thermal shcck tests were also carried out on these bodies. The changes in the fracture behavior of the high Young's modulus phase on additions of the low Young's modulus dispersed phase were observed. Transient thermal stresses in spherical bodies subjected to thermal shock were calculated. (D.L.C.)
