Impossibility of spontaneously breaking local symmetries

It is argued that a spontaneous breaking of local symmetry for a symmetrical gauge theory without gauge fixing is impossible. The argument is demonstrated in a simple system of Abelian gauge fields on a lattice. (AIP)
