Experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium data always contain random error as result of the uncertainty associated with experimental measurements. The data may also contain nonrandom or systematic error caused by improper experimental procedure. A thermodynamic consistency test is proposed which permits statistical treatment of random error and thus systematic error is more easily identified. Simulated systems with imposed random error are used to illustrate and verify the procedures.
