THE SYNTHESIS OF HIGHLY ORIENTED POLYTHIOMETHYLENE DIRECTLY BY THE RADIATION POLYMERIZATION OF CRYSTALLINE TRITHIANE
Experimental conditions are reported for the successful radiation polymerization of crystalline trithiane to yield highly oriented polythiomethylene. It is noted that the sharp orientation spots of polythiomethylene form definite layer lines corresponding to a spacing along the axis of orientation of the polymer of 5.10 A, quite close to the spacing of trithiane in this direction of 5.25 A. An analysis of the x-ray reflections of polythiomethylene, distinguishable from those of trithiane indicates a possible orthorhombic space group for the polymer with a = 12.7, b = 12.0, and c = 5.10 A. A list of the polymer reflections and their, Miller indexes, assuming the orthorhombic unit cell is given. (P.C.H.)
