The requirement for refinery hydrogen is increasing due to stricter product specifications and a decline in the quality of crude available for processing. A great deal of hydrogen is available from various refinery offgases. Since these streams also contain other hydrocarbons, they can be processed to provide useful byproducts in addition to hydrogen. Combining pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and cryogenics in a central recovery unit can provide a high recovery of high-purity hydrogen, while also producing valuable heavier byproducts. A case history is presented of a recovery unit in a Polish refinery. The paper describes H{sub 2} product delivery pressure, PSA plant and purge gas compression, the cryogenic section, flexibility, and economics.
