MODIFIED SYNTHETIC CONDENSATION POLYMERS AND THEIR PRODUCTION
Description is given of a process for the production of a grafted polymer ln which the substrate is a synthetic condensation polymer and the grafted structures contain acld groups or acid salt groups other than carboxyl or carboxylate salts groups and are derived from monomers containing reactive nonaromatic carbon-carbon unsaturation and groups corresponding to or convertible to the acid groups or acid salt groups. The grafted structure is a styrene sulfonic acid containing calcium, sodium, or potassium salt group. The synthetic condensation polymer is a polyamide. The grafting is accomplished by irradiating the solid substrate in contact with the monomer with high energy particulate or electromagnetic ionizing radiation. The substrate is maintained below 0 deg C untll the grafting is completed. (N.W.R.)
