THE PROBLEM OF NUCLEAR SHELTERS

The rationale for the development of civilian defense in the U. S. is reviewed. The effects of nuclear weapons are summarized for various blast parameters, distances, and areas. Biological effects of radiation and the protection afforded to the population by shelters in the event of radiological warfare are discussed. Protective criteria for shelters are outlined. The need for advance preparations is stressed. (C.H.)
