An outline is presented of the U. S. Army Medical Corps 5-day course on management of mass casualties which might result from thermonuclear war or other civil disaster. Basic rules for survival in the event of a disaster are given, as follows: recognition of dangerous conditions and taking of preventive measures; preparation for the event, which includes instructions on what to do when it occurs; heeding warning of alert signals and obeying instructions; making proper use of preparations made; being able to determine when danger is over; proper care for injured and removal of dead; and restoration of livable conditions as soon as safely possible. Subjects of particular interest to the civilian physician were presented. Sorting of casualties is discussed. Civil defense planning at the local, community level is also discussed. (BBB)
