Process plants (including refineries) as well as general factors have to date been constructed with emphasis laid on production functions and efficiency under the Japanese government`s high economic growth policy, with amenity for workers little considered. The author briefly reviews the current circumstances in industry. The conventional concept of improved amenity is to reduce employees` physical/mental stress as far as possible (reduction of discomfort). In designing working places and industrial activities for the future, however, it is necessary for industries to improve amenity for employees so that they can work more comfortably and expect reasonable rewards according to achievement. Requirements for improved amenity and results which can be expected from there are discussed.
