Journal Article · · Med. Serv. J. (Can.)
OSTI ID:4034752
Fission products of major biological significance are discussed, and the critical organ for and radiologic and biologic half lives of /sup 89/Sr, /sup 90/Sr, /sup 131/I, /sup 137/Cs, an d /sup 140/Ba are tabulated. Entrance of radionuclides into the biosphere via four pathways (soil, foliar, floral, and plant-base) is exemplified by reference to radiostrontium. Fallout contamination of drugs and other medical supplies is also considered. The hazards of fallout, the typical lesions produced by early and late fallout, evaluation of the internal hazard, prevention of contamination, and decontamination measures are reviewed. Rules are presented as a practical guide for the early times after attack. Among other problems discussed are: criteria for administering blood transfusions to irradiated persons and protection of x-ray film from fogging by fallout. (BBB)
