PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF GRAFT COPOLYMERS
A process for the production of articles of grafted polyvinyl alcohol is described. The process consists of impregnating a shaped article of polyvinyl alcohol with an aqueous solution of a radical-forming catalyst and subjecting the article under radical-forming conditions to the action of an ethylenically unsatarated monomer in the liquid or vapor phase. The catalyst medium is a mixture of water and glycol and the cdtalyst is a water-soluble per-salt or a redox system. Grafting is carried out at upwards of 40 deg C, wherein a hydrophobic monomer is used for grafting and grafting is continued until the article is completely insoluble in water. The monomer is acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, methyl methacrylate, or vinyl acetate. (N.W.R.)
