Effect of temperature on steam generator fretting-wear

Flow-induced vibration of steam generator tubes results in fretting-wear damage at the tube-to-support locations. A test program was conducted to assess the effect of temperature on steam generator tube fretting-wear. Tests were performed using lattice bar supports, at temperatures ranging from 25 to 315 C. A parameter called work-rate was used to normalize the wear rates and interpret the results in terms of wear coefficients. The role of corrosion was investigated and Scanning Electron Microscope examinations of fretted samples were performed to provide complementary information and identify pre-eminent fretting-wear mechanisms. The results revealed a significant effect of temperature on steam generator tube fretting-wear. Wear rates measured at elevated temperature are greater than those measured at room temperature. A peak in damage rate is observed at approximately 200 C, beyond which wear decreases with temperature.
