TRANSFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS OF U-Mo AND U-Mo-Ti ALLOYS

Journal Article · · Trans. Am. Soc. Metals

Isothermal transformation kinetics are described for four uranium-base alloys: U--8 Mo, U--10 Mo, U--8 Mo-1/2 Ti, and U-- 8 Mo-- 1 Ti. The time- temperaturetransformation (TTT) diagrams presented are based on metallographic, dilatometric, microhardness, and x-ray-diffraction data. For the alloys under investigation, the transformation behavior may be divided conveniently into high- and low-temperature regions. At high temperatures the metastable bcc gamma phase decomposed by either a cellular mechanism or by a combination of cellular and Widmanstatten mechanisms. Isothermal transformation at low temperatures involved a different mechanism or mechanisms, but the transformation structures could not be revealed metallographically. X-ray-diffraction and hardness measurements were utilized to follow the course of transformation at these temperatures. Decomposition in the low-temperature range was initiated by precipitation of gamma homogeneously throughout the gamma matrix. (auth)
