VERIFICATION OF THE PROPERTIES OF THE VAVILOV-CHERENKOV RADIATION IN AN UNIAXIAL CALCITE CRYSTAL (in Russian)

Experimental results of a study of a number of properties of the Vavilov- Cherenkov radiation in an uniaxial crystal of calcite produced by a 863-Mev proton beam ( BETA = 0.81) are presented. The radiation properties were investigated in the two particular cases: (a) the particles move along the optical axis and (b) the particles move perpendicular to the optical axis of the crystal. The predictions of the theory thnt in case (a) a single cone of extraordinary waves is excited and in case (b) two radiation cones are excited (an ordinary and extraordinary one) are confirmed experimentally. The conclusions of the theory regarding the directional properties (emission angles) of the radiation, the polarization and threshold properties, and azimuth distribution of the radiation intensity are also in complete agreement with the theory.
