Fatigue growth of semi-elliptical cracks in plates subjected to bending

Book ·
OSTI ID:403226
The evaluation of crack propagation in nuclear components, subjected to cyclic loading, is an important factor in verifying their integrity. This paper reports an experimental study of semi-elliptical cracks in plates subjected. By using different markings and measuring the Electric Drop Potential, the crack propagation is followed during all of the test and compared with values from simplified methods for evaluating the crack front shape. A 3-D description by an elastic-plastic finite element calculation of the initial loading of one of the plates is then given. This provides values in agreement with those found in the test. Finally, a calculation of J along the front is presented and compared with results of the J{sub S} simplified method. The same comparison is given for a cyclic finite-element calculation for an intermediate front on another plate.
