Title: DETERMINATION OF ZIRCONIUM, BORON, CARBON, AND SILICON IN ZIRCONIUM DIBORIDE (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Bunseki Kagaku (Japan)

Chemical propertie; of zirconium diboride prepared by carbothermic reduction of mixture of ZrO/sub 2/ and B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ were studied, and methods for the determination of Zr, B, C, and Si were investigated. It was found thnt sodium carbonate fusion was the most practical means for disolution of zirconium diboride for the determination of Zr and B in a single sample. The melt was digested with water, and Zr was separated by filtering. Boron in the filtrate, after neutralization, removal of CO/sub 2/, and the addition of mannite, was titrated with 0.1N NaOH solution from pH 7.0 to the end poirt of pH 8.3. The residue, of which the major part was ZrO/sub 2/, was fused with K/sub 2/S/sub 2/O/ sub 7/, and the melt obtained was dissolved in dilute H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/. Zirconium in the solution was precipitated by cupferron, ignited to ZrO/sub 2/, and weighed. Carbon was volumetrically determined by the combustion method, using Pb/sub 3/O/sub 4/ or CuO as an accelerator. Silicon was determined colorimetrically as silicomolybdate by dissolving the sample in a mixture of 3N HF and 2N HNO/sub 3/ at 70 approximates 80 deg C. Fluoride was masked by H/sub 3/BO/sub 3/, ammonium molybdate was added, and pH was adjusted between 1.2 and 1.3. Molybdenum blue method was used for low concentrations of silicon. The method was also successfully applied for the analysis of hafnium diboride. (auth)
