Recoilless emission and resonance absorption of the 26-kev gamma ray emitted ih the beta decay of Tb>s1/sup >> /re observed. The existence of the first excited stute of Dy>s1/sup >> / 26 kev is thus confirmed. From the measurement of the transmission of this gamma ray through various thicknesses of the Dy/sub 2/O/sub 3/ absorber, the percentages of recoilless emission and recoilless absorption were estimated to be (10 plus or minus 2)% and (6.5 plus or minus 2)%, respectively. From the curve showing the change in the transmission as a function of the relative velocity of the source and the absorber, the width of the 26-kev state (for an absorber thickness of 19.65 mg/ cm>s2/sup )/as found to be about 1.04 x 10>s-/sup > /, which is about 70 times what is expected from the measured half life of this state.
