The electro-oxidation of ethanol on thermally prepared ruthenium oxide in alkaline solution was investigated by rotating-disk electrode (RDE) and polarization techniques. The oxidation of ethanol was mediated by perruthenate electrogenerated on the electrode surface. The following mechanism of ethanol oxidation on ruthenium oxide was proposed. Heterogeneous reactions: RuO{sub 4}{sup 2{minus}} {r_equilibrium} RuO{sub 4}{sup {minus}} + e{sup {minus}}; RuO{sub 4}{sup {minus}} + CH{sub 3}CH{sub 2}OH + OH {yields} CH{sub 3}CH(RuO{sub 4}{sup 2{minus}})OH + H{sub 2}O; and CH{sub 3}CH(RuO{sub 4}{sup 2{minus}})OH + RuO{sub 4}{sup {minus}} + OH{sup {minus}} {yields} CH{sub 3}CHO + 2RuO{sub 4}{sup 2{minus}} + H{sub 2}O. Homogeneous reaction: CH{sub 3}CHO + CH{sub 3}CHO {r_equilibrium} CH{sub 3}CHOHCH{sub 2}CHO. The kinetic parameters also were obtained by comparing the developed kinetic model and the experimental results.
