EFFECTS OF PARITY NONCONSERVING INTERNUCLEON POTENTIALS ON THE PHOTOEFFECT IN H$sup 2$

The effect of parity nonconservation on the photodisintegration of the deuteron and on the radiative capture of neutrons by hydrogen is studied. Photodisintegration is calculated at laboratory photon energies of 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 140 Mev, and n-p capture at laboratory neutron energies of 0.1 and 0.548 Mev. The internucleon potential of Hamada plus the parity nonconserving potential of Blin-Stoyle are used to represent the proton-neutron interaction. The following experimental ratios (which would vanish for parity conserving forces) were calculated and all found to be less than 10/sup -7/, and therefore too small to be measurable. The asymmetry of the cross section with respect to the plane of gamma -ray polarization and the nucleon polarization in the plane of scattering for unpolarized incident gamma rays were measured for photodisintegration. The up-down asymmetry in the cross section with polarized incident neutrons and the net circular polarization of the outgoing photons with unpolarized incident neutrons were measured for n-p capture.
