Liquefaction of marine soils
- Southern Illinois Univ., Carbondale, IL (United States)
Cohesionless soils of loose and medium density have a tendency to compact under vibrations due to decreases in interagranular space. In offshore areas where the soils are saturated, the tendency for volume decrease gives rise to increase in pore water pressure in the soil resulting in loss of confinement and shear strength of the soil. This phenomenon known as liquefaction may cause severe damage to the foundations, conductors, riser lines, submerged and the superstructures. The liquefaction potential of soils can be evaluated from a knowledge of the soil properties and the cyclic loading history due to seismic motion wave action. This paper presents the methods for evaluation of liquefaction potential of soils. The cyclic strength approach and the cyclic strain approach for liquefaction analysis are discussed. The paper also presents the author`s investigation on some aspects of liquefaction of silts for which very little information is available.
