HYDROMAGNETIC COUPLING BETWEEN SOLAR WIND AND MAGNETOSPHERE

Journal Article · · Planetary Space Sci.
A model is preserted by which changes in the direction of the interplanetary magnetic field can cause energy from the solar wind to be coupled to the magnetosphere. The energy is transferred by hydromagnetic waves genernted by wagging of the tail of the magnetosphere. The wagging is due to time varying asymmetries in solar wind pressure in the vicinity of the magnetosphere, brought about principally by fluctuations in the direction of the interplanetary magnetic field relative to the solar wind velocity vector. A functional dependence is deduced that connects the fluctuation period of the direction of the interplanetary field to the geomagnetic alpha /sub p/-index. (auth)
