SOLAR-STREAM DISTORTION OF THE GEOMAGNETIC FIELD AND POLAR ELECTROJETS

Journal Article · · J. Geophys. Research
ABS>It is shown that magnetic field gradients perpendicular to meridional planes may be introduced by solar-stream distortions of the geomagnetic field with the creation of polar electrojets. Longitudinal magnetic field gradients will lead to drift separation of geomagnetically trapped protons and electrons normal to field lines and in meridional planes, and thus to a suitable latitudinal charge separation in trapped radiation incident at auroral latitudes.
