A single crystal of CH$sub 3$COONa.3D$sub 2$O was $gamma$ irradiated, and the ESR spectra of the methyl radical was studied from 77$sup 0$K to 4.2$sup 0$K. At 77$sup 0$K the radical is thought to be rotating freely about the threefold symmetry axis of the molecule; but as the temperature decreases, the rotational motion is expected to be strongly restricted. Six ESR spectra are presented which show additional splitting at lower temperatures. Analysis of the spectra confirm the expected quantum tunneling rotation of the radical in the crystal. (DDA)
