Mass- and heat transfer are shown to be decisive mechanisms for gas hydrate growth kinetics in the laboratory as well as in nature. This is demonstrated by computer simulations of common laboratory experiments and hydrate reservoir formation processes in subsea sediments. In the latter case, the shape and size of the hydrate masses embedded in the porous medium can be deduced from kinetics and mass transport.
