EFFECTS OF PROTON-ALPHA INTERACTION IN ($alpha$,p) REACTIONS AND THE REACTION MECHANISM IN (1d,2s) SHELL NUCLEI

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B
An improvement of the knock-out theory for ( alpha ,p) reactions is attempted using the impulse approximation and thus taking into account the characteristic features of the proton-alpha interaction. The whole theory is formulated for cases both with and without wave-distortion by nuclei. The mechanlsm of ( alpha ,p) reactions in some (1d, 2s) shell nuclei is investigated using the angular distribution as predicted by the latter theory. The results indicate that the reactions take place predominantiy through the stripping process over the nuclei, except that some characteristics of the knock-out process appear in the case of the F/sup 19/ target nucleus. A pure knock-out process having been assumed, the polarization of the emitted protons is calculated for the F/sup 19/ target nucleus and found to be large in the forward angular region. Finally, it is pointed out that, in view of the dispersion relation, the polarization measurement is very important for the determination of the reaction mechanism. (auth)
