The reduction product produced by ionizing radiation in single crystals of adenine dihydrochloride x irradiated at 4.2 degreeK was studied by ESR--ENDOR spectroscopy. Addition of an electron to the protonated base yields a free radical with a spin density of approximately 0.30 on the C-8 carbon atom. The spin density was inferred from ENDOR measurements of the hyperfine coupling of the C$sub 8$--H proton. (AIP)
