INVESTIGATION OF THE NUCLEAR MATRIX ELEMENT PARAMETERS FOR FIRST-FORBIDDEN BETA DECAY
An analysis was made of first forbidden beta groups of /sup 186/Re, / sup 188/Re, /sup 170/Tm, /sup 152/Eu, /sup 154/Eu, and /sup 124/ Sb. The available experimental data were used to determine suitable values for the nuclear matrix elements for each transition. The areas of agreement that exist between the experimentally determined matrix elements and the theoretical relations that are proposed for the matrix elements were investigated. An attempt was made to establish an experimental estimate for the parameter LAMBDA (Ahrens' and Feenberg's notation). The following conclusions were reached: (1) The presentiy available experimental data alone do not determine well defined matrix elements for any of the transitions. (2) Taken as a whole, the decays considered provide no conclusive evidence for a particular value of A. (3) However, for the decays considered, if it is assumed that LAMBDA approximately 2.5 a well defined solution that is compatible with the assumptions of the modified B/sub ij/ approximation'' is produced. 34 references.
