DETERMINATION OF $alpha$-ALUMINUM SOLID SOLUBILITY LIMITS IN THE ALUMINUM- URANIUM AND ALUMINUM-PLUTONIUM SYSTEMS

Journal Article · · Journal of Nuclear Materials (Netherlands)
The alpha -aluminum solid solubility limits in the aluminum-uranium and aluminum --plutonium systems have been determined by metallographic methods. The maximum solid solubilities of uranium in aluminum and of plutonium in aluminum were found to be 0.06 plus or minus 0.02 wt% U and 0.05 plus or minus 0.02 wt% Pu respectively at the corresponding eutectic temperatures. The alpha Al- UAl/ sub 4/ and alpha Al--PuAl/sub 4/ eutectic ternperatures have been established by thermal analysis as 646 plus or minus 0.5 deg C and 650 plus or minus 0.5 deg C respectively. At 350 deg C, the solid solubility decreased to less than 0.04 wt% U in the Al--U system and to less than 0.025 wt% Pu in the Al--Pu system. (auth)
