The effect of roll-heave coupling on the responses of floating bodies is investigated by comparing the free-oscillation behavior of a coupled roll-heave model to that of an uncoupled model. It is found that an important coupling effect is the additional roll damping due to the energy dissipation of the accompanying heave motion. The additional roll damping ratio depends mainly on the roll response, draught-to-beam ratio and the location of the mass center of the floating body.
