The principal products produced in the radiolysis (200 kv x rays) of aqueous solutions of sodium azide at pH 8.0, in the absence of oxygen, are nitrogen and ammonia, the yields of which vary markedly with the azide concentration. The results are shown to be accommodated by a mechanism in which both the oxidizing and the reducing species produced by the interaction of the ionizing radiation with water react with the azide ion, leading to the N/sub 3/ radical and to nitrogen and the NH/sup -/ ion, respectively. The N/sub 3/ radical is found to be stable with respect to its self-dissociation. (auth)
