Extension of service life of offshore platforms -- Assessment by structural risk analysis
- Oil and Natural Gas Commission, New Bombay (India). Inst. of Engineering and Ocean Technology
The extension of service life of offshore platforms beyond their design life is dealt in this paper by an in-depth assessment of original design, as built information, structural integrity, codes provisions and structural risk analysis. The various uncertainties and accidental events that will influence structural safety during the extended period are discussed. Mainly structural risk analysis of fixed offshore platforms is presented in detail based on system reliability approach. Design limit states, probability of platform failure and structural redundancy are discussed. The advantage of load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) approach during the design is highlighted in this context. Appropriate inspection methodology is suggested for platforms intended for operation beyond their initial design life.
