The redistribution of residual stresses during fatigue crack propagation has been studied with the use of the residual stress intensity factors, K{sub res}, associated with weight function. Using superposition techniques, the effective range of stress intensity factor, K{sub eff}, and the growth rate of the part-through surface crack in tubular joints can be predicted. The results show that the redistribution of residual stress and the pattern of residual stresses in the surface layer significantly affect the fatigue behavior of tubular joints. A comparison is made between analytical and experimental results in T-tubular joints with weld related residual stresses.
