IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4028543
A control system for obtaining a trip signal for reactor shutdown in response to excess neutron flux, is designed in which the risk of spurious trip signals is reduced to a minimum. The control system includes an ionization chamber, an a-c generator for providing polarizing potentials for the chamber, an integrator for receiving the chamber output, means for feeding to the integrator current components which cancel out the normal in-phase component of the chamber output and produce a residual signal from the quadrature components, means for sampling the integrator output at electrical angle intervals, and means for causing a control element to trigger in response to the integrated in-phase component. The operation of the control system is discussed in detail, and the reasons for its good fail-safe characteristics are outlined. (D.L.C.)
