MATERIALS FOR BOILING WATER AND SUPERHEATED STEAM NUCLEAR POWER REACTORS

Journal Article · · Mater. Res. Std.

Materials for boiling water reactors are selected primarily for corrosion resistance. In general, Type 304 austenitic stainless steel or carbon steel clad with Type 304 is used to contain the reactor coolant. Exceptions are the fuel cladding and fuel structural parts that are often made of zirconium alloys to reduce neutron absorption in the reactor core. Superheated steam reactors will use the same materials as conventional superheated steam plants except in the core area, where wet steam appears to dictate the use of high- nlckel alloys such as Inconel 600 or Incoloy 800. Current ASTM specifications appear adequate for materials other than thick plates and forgings that require accelerated cooling. Nondestructive testing specifications for radiographic and ultrasonic procedures are inadequate and should be modified to provide adequate controls of the testing process. (auth)
