A unit fuel element assembly for a gas-cooled, graphitemoderated reactor is described. The assembly consists of an array of rectangular fuel plates in parallel planes extending obliquely to the vertical and spaced apart to permit coolant to flow between the fuel plates. The fuel plates supported at oppoalte side edges in support plates which are at their upper and lower ends mounted on vertical struts in a manner to permit a limited amount of movement of the support plats and fuel plate assembly relative to the struts. Preferably the support plates are mount on the struts by horizontal bars secured to the struts carrying beveled washers which abut against correspondingly chamfered surfaces on the outer faces of the support plates.
