SM-1 RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. DECONTAMINATION OF SM-1 PRIMARY SYSTEM, TASK XVI-PHASE I

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4026014
Ae method is reported for decontaminating the SM-L steam generator. Special plugs will be inserted in the reactor outlet nozzle and the casings of both primary coolant pumps to isolate the steam generater from the remainder of the primary system and to allow for introduction and removal of the decontamination solution. Radioactive deposits will be removed by circulating a solution of caustic permanganate followed by a water rinse, ammorium citrate- citric acid-Versene 9 solution, and several more water rinses. The results obtained from a feasibility study of decontaminating the entire SM-1 primary syatem with the core removed, are given. Preliminary corrosion data are reported. Two methods for draining the lower portion of the reactor vessel also are presented. (D.L.C.)
