ON SECRETION OF I$sup 131$ IN THE TRACHEAL SECRETION OF THYROIDECTOMIZED GUINEA PIGS AND ITS INFLUENCE BY DRUGS (in German)

Thyroidectomized guinea pigs, weighing 300 to 500 g, were given 200 mu C Na/sup 131/I. The animals were sacrificed 1, 2, and 3 hr afterwards; and the ratios of tracheal secretion/ plasma, tracheal mucosa/plasma, and secretion/ trachea activity were determined. Secretion/trachea ratio in controls dropped from 5.25 (1 hr) to 2.08 (3 hr) (mean value of 7 to 9 animals). Animals given 200 mg/kg NaClO/sub 4/ in water 1 hr previously showed secretion/plasma activity of 0.698 and trachea/plasma activity of 0.699, not significantly different from the controls. In another series, pilocarpine (0.5 mg/kg) was given intraperitoneally 1 hr after the NaI, and the animals sacrificed 1,2,3, and 5 hr after administration of the drug. Pilocarpine increases the concentration of / sup 131/I in the tracheal secretion significantiy, particularly 3 hr after drug adminlstration, when secretion/ plasma ratio was 31.0; 2 hr later this was 12.5. After 2, 3, and 5 hr the secretion/trachea and trachea/plasma ratios did not differ significantly from the controls. The combined effect of the NaClO/sub 4/ and pilocarpine treatments was to return the result to those found with NaClO/sub 4/ alone; thus NaClO/sub 4/ decreases secretion of /sup 131/I. Ten minutes' ether narcosis before sacrifice of the animals led to an increase of secretion/ trachea ratio of 1.1-, 3.1-, and 2.3-fold over controls and of trachea/plasma of 1.2-, 1.5-, and 1.4-fold over controls for 1, 2, and 3 hr. Plasma activity studies also indicated a decrease in secretion caused by NaClO/sub 4/. Thus pilocaprine and ether treatment appear to increase secretion of /sup 131/I. (BBB)
